Game Fatigue and Gaming FOMO

Happy March 15th, Nerds.

This topic came to me this morning as I was getting off work. I come home, sit down on my couch and load up my PS4. I stare at all the games I have currently installed and realize that none of them appeal to me at that moment. Don't get me wrong, all of them are great and have offered me many, many hours of entertainment. However, I can't shake this feeling of wanting something new to play. I currently own games that I have not finished that are fantastic games, but I find I am always thinking about the games I don't have, or the games that are coming soon that I want to play.

I think it may simply be that we are only a few months into 2017 and already there are an obscene amount of Triple A games that are out, or on there way very soon. Let alone, a whole new system was just released a week ago. To be fair, I am technically only missing out on one game by not purchasing the Nintendo Switch at this time, and i'll be damned if I am about to get a Wii-U just to play Breath of the Wild. When I finally tackle that beast it will be on the system it was meant for.
Just look at the last few months. Resident Evil VII, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Nier: Automata, Ghost Recon, For Honor. Moving forward we have Mass Effect, Prey, Injustice just to name three. I got into the habit (When I had disposable income) of buying a game, blowing through the main story and doing a quick trophy clean up until the next game came out. I would rarely return to a title unless prompted by an in game event, which has been becoming more popular lately, most likely due to Destiny. Mainly I would not return to most titles because soon after that a new "Must play" was released. And I, like many other gaming nerds suffer from Gaming FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). If you are like me, you want to be a part of the conversation. You need to be able to share your opinion, or listen to other gamers thoughts and theories about the new games without having anything spoiled for yourself.

Resident Evil VII is a good example of a game that I could of waited for a price drop before I bought it. Not because it's a bad game. Matter of fact it is a fantastic game, but with no online functionality, there is no reason to play it the moment of it's release unless you're a huge Resident Evil fan that has been waiting years to play this instalment. I did however, need to be a part of the echo chamber of those who played and bested the evils of that house. So I too could talk about it to friends, and read fan theories about characters in the game.

So I sit here on my couch, with plenty of games at my disposal. Games I could potentially obtain the illusive Platinum trophies in. However, I just want to play Mass Effect. It's a problem that really hurts the wallet. I want to spend the rest of my week revisiting "older" games just to give them the time they deserve. While I wait for Andromeda I will most likely be playing Battlefield 1 and screwing around in Metal Gear Solid 5.
My plea to the Nerds that read this, go back through your catalog of games and give a little more time to a game that deserves it.
